Open Watchtower

Startup funding, investors and unicorns

Methods edition: 1 November 2026. Open Investigate → Companies → Discover → Startups & Unicorns.

Coverage and its dates

The qualified archive contains 51,240 company records, 42,637 with a reported cumulative funding amount, 17,777 named investors and investment groups, 52,626 detailed funding rounds and 80,147 unique round-participant links. There are 1,074 companies in the separate 2022 unicorn snapshot.

These are historical source records, not a current startup census. Detailed financing relationships are through December2013; the company funding export is primarily from2014, with source dates extending to2015-01-01. The unicorn file is from2022. A retrieval or installation date does not update these observations. The existing provider unicorn tracker remains available through its original source view and limits.

What the money means

Source USD equivalents and original round currencies are separately exposed. Rounded $B/$M figures retain their original display and rounding state. Zero markers can mean an undisclosed amount; absence is not repaired with zero. Individual investor contributions are not supplied, so no round total is multiplied across participants or presented as their capital deployed.

Identity and data quality

Historical Crunchbase company permalinks are exact identity keys. The 2022 snapshot is linked only when company name, country and founding year match exactly and uniquely. Ambiguous brands/aliases remain separate source records. This is source-record reconciliation, not a legal-entity verification service.

Two duplicate export permalinks have both observations retained, including their conflicting dates. Repeated round-participant rows retain their original row IDs while counting the relationship once. Missing recipients/investor identities and invalid dates remain measured gaps.

Public professional investor names and reported investment relationships are included. No biographies, personal contact information, source-user accounts or private profiles are included.

CSV and evidence exports

Search/filter the complete installed archive, inspect company and investor relationships, or export the matching company, investor or round table. Exports preserve dates, source identity and missing individual contributions. CSV cells are spreadsheet-escaped. Exports are bounded to100,000rows/64MiB and cancel rather than save an unnoticed partial file. Company/round investor lists are complete within the qualified snapshot, not a global investment-history claim.

Native and MCP access

The existing /agent/api/unicorn-tracker path adds explicit read-only views: overview, companies, company, investors, investor, rounds, round and sources. Omit view to retain the existing provider response. Use IDs returned by the directory rather than guessing.

{"path":"/agent/api/unicorn-tracker","params":{"view":"companies","q":"Stripe","limit":50}}
{"path":"/agent/api/unicorn-tracker","params":{"view":"investors","q":"Sequoia","limit":50}}
{"path":"/agent/api/unicorn-tracker","params":{"view":"rounds","company":"cb13:c:71058","limit":50}}

Native pages accept1–500records; follow page.nextOffset with the same filters and native snapshot. A changed dataset/filter snapshot is409, not mixed data. The MCP response has its own separate scalar/text pagination and retained snapshot. This native search covers the entire archive; global keyword indexing and genuine retained captures have separate coverage and are not asserted complete for every row.
