Companies: source-backed research
The mining/extraction universe is a source-bounded research index, not an exhaustive worldwide list of active mining companies or a Bloomberg-equivalent data service.
Inventory construction
- SEC nightly submissions archive: 987,283 primary submissions files scanned; 3,639 registrants in extraction/mining SIC codes 1000–1499. This includes energy and services, older registrants and companies without current ticker references.
- Worldwide Wikidata: the union of mining-company instances and mining-industry/activity business-entity queries. 2,789 resolved entities were acquired; community claims are not independently verified current operations.
- Existing Watchtower curated watchlists are preserved as identified reference sources. Exact CIK, ticker-with-SEC identity context, or exact reported names/aliases are used for reconciliation; unresolved references are not silently fused by fuzzy name matching.
The compiled universe contains 6,436 reference records, with 3,072 visible under the default history filter. These are not guaranteed unique currently operating miners: unresolved aliases and differing source scopes remain possible. Category counts overlap and include historical records unless filtered. Commodity and lifecycle semantics
Categories are mapped from reported SEC SIC, Wikidata industry/type/product statements and explicit descriptions, and labelled legacy-watchlist membership. Company names alone are not used to infer commodity exposure. Broad SIC 1040 gold/silver classifications remain “Precious metals (unallocated SIC)” unless a more specific reference is connected. Category membership does not establish quantified production or an operational mine.
Operating stage is not inferred from market capitalization or a “junior” watchlist label. A reported dissolution is historical. SEC registrants with neither ticker references nor filings in the preceding two years are hidden by default as older records, not declared legally inactive. Country context is a reported business-address jurisdiction or Wikidata country statement, not mine geography or necessarily legal domicile. Unambiguous U.S. state descriptions are grouped under United States; ambiguous Georgia address context is left unresolved.
Primary financial facts
Financial facts load only for a selected, allowlisted SEC CIK. The response issuer identifier must match. Standard US-GAAP and IFRS concepts are selected by the latest reporting end date, then filing date; amendments supersede older observations for the same unit and reporting interval. Different currencies and durations remain separate rows. Reported zeros remain zero; absent or invalid values are not converted into zero.
The panel shows the reporting entity name, taxonomy concept, value, unit, period start/end, filing date, form and accession-linked source. It does not calculate TTM results, EV multiples, cash runway or cross-currency comparisons from unmatched facts. Custom issuer extensions and unsupported concepts remain gaps. Facts are cached for six hours, requests are serialized with spacing, and SEC 403/429 retry windows persist across restarts.
Mining disclosures and remaining gaps
Production, reserves/resources, AISC/cash costs, guidance, project ownership, exploration stage and mine-specific capex require current issuer disclosures and technical reports. They are not manufactured from names, prices or SIC codes. Issuer websites, captured primary filings and source records are linked for review.
Complete current TSX/TSXV, ASX, LSE/AIM and other exchange mining populations have not been reconciled. Private and state-owned entities are unevenly covered. Listing references can be old or changed; a ticker is venue-specific and is not proof of active trading. No real-time market-data or analyst-consensus entitlement is implied.
Attribution and refresh
SEC public identifiers and factual filing extracts retain SEC/issuer attribution; Wikidata structured data is CC0. Market-provider data remains in the pre-existing separately sourced dossier. No owner-private API data enters the shared universe. Universe acquisition is an offline, versioned rebuild; the snapshot date is displayed. Financial facts are on demand. Updated listings, taxonomy changes and corporate actions require the next reviewed rebuild.
