A power-capacity map in Monetary Predictions

The Power capacity section adds a country map, energy-source breakdowns, year selection and country details. National EIA references cover 214 mapped countries/areas with total-capacity observations, with annual references from 2020 through 2024. Capacity is shown in MW or GW, not confused with electricity generated in MWh or TWh.

The national-statistics view and tracked-plant view remain separate. EIA combines fossil fuels in these capacity series; the plant view provides more detailed technology/fuel groupings. Overlapping national subtotals are not added together, and the existing monetary-pressure model is not changed.

Power projects on Infrastructure

Infrastructure now has a Power projects control. Enable it to explore GEM's September 2026 catalogue, with source status and technology filters, source-record details and a paged register. The imported catalogue contains 183,404 units/phases across 226 mapped countries/areas, including 29,501 announced or pre-construction units and 6,235 under construction.

World-scale views use labelled aggregation cells so every matching locatable unit is represented rather than silently selecting only the largest plants. Zooming reveals individual records. Cluster positions are derived summaries, not plant coordinates. The country view links directly to its proposed projects in Infrastructure.

How to interpret the data

Proposed and under-construction capacity is not operating capacity or guaranteed future output. Units and phases are not necessarily distinct plants. GEM's tracker thresholds exclude some smaller facilities and distributed generation; the data is not a claim to include every proposal on Earth. Exact and approximate source locations remain distinguished. Permitting stages are not separately exposed in this public map edition.

National statistics, tracked facilities and the older WRI map layer have different years, coverage and capacity conventions. They are not summed together. Source links, original annual references, catalogue release, missing values and licence attribution remain available in the interface.
