A new historical map workspace

Ancient Map brings 796 map-image records and 795 hosted previews together with creator, date, source and licence context. Collections include Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Greek/Ptolemaic, Roman, Arabic/Persian, Ottoman, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, South Asian, Mesoamerican, Pacific and later atlas traditions.

Compare across time

Choose two of 51 supplied historical boundary snapshots from 5000 BCE through 2010 CE, adjust opacity or compare synchronized maps side by side. The timeline and playback step through actual source frames. Select a region to inspect its original source properties.

Compare map images side by side, with an opacity blend or with swipe reveal. Manual scale, offset and rotation are visual aids, not geographic registration.

Source context stays visible

Map creation, surviving-copy, photograph and depicted-period dates can differ. Image records can include sheets, details and later reconstructions; the collection is not a count of unique ancient originals. Historical polygons are illustrative cultural/political references, not interpolated frontiers or current territorial control.

Source descriptions, creators and image licences remain linked. Historical-basemaps geometry remains downloadable under GPL-3.0 with its original credits. Filters, source context, selection exports and view links support further research.
